- CBC Radio 2: Two New Hours, CD Review: A Shrinking Planet
“Speaking of Canadian piano music, A Shrinking Planet is a beautiful and thoughtful CD by Réa Beaumont … Recorded at Glenn Gould Studio its centerpiece is the world première recording of Barbara Pentland’s Small Pieces for a Shrinking Planet” - Editor’s Corner, The WholeNote (Toronto), CD Review: A Shrinking Planet
Réa Beaumont's solo CD A Shrinking Planet was one of the first albums to highlight cultural diversity in Canadian new music and it is an ideal album for listeners who enjoy virtuoso contemporary repertoire.
The CD was premiered on CBC Radio 2’s legendary new music show “Two New Hours” with host Larry Lake. The broadcast included interviews with Réa and the award-winning composers Chan Ka Nin, Alice Ping Yee Ho, and Walter Buczynski whose works appear on the CD.
The album features twice JUNO Award recipient Chan Ka Nin's largest piano work to date, the virtuoso *In Search Of… that was commissioned by the CBC for Réa to perform. The title of this album is from this world premiere recording of the composition *Small Pieces for a Shrinking Planet written by one of Canada’s most importantly historic composers Barbara Pentland (1912-2000) whose work was recognized with the Order of Canada. A Shrinking Planet also includes *Garage by Alice Ping Yee Ho, winner of the Dora Mavor Moore Award, and it closes with the virtuoso Sonata by Queen Elizabeth Medal recipient Walter Buczynski.
Recorded at CBC Glenn Gould Studio; Producer: Eitan Cornfield; Recording Engineer: Dennis Patterson, 2009.
